Thank You Mr Lee Kuan Yew

It was inevitable. For the past few days, Singaporeans have mentally prepared themselves. Yet, as news broke this morning, we are still left reeling in shock, unable to grasp the harsh reality that our founding father has truly left us.

He had been a constant presence in our lives. Every single National Day, without fail, Singaporeans would see him among the seats, waving the Singapore flag with great pride. He seemed invincible. In History and Social Studies lessons, we learnt about his fight against communism, his resolve in safeguarding Singapore's well-being, his tenacity and determination. Perhaps, we thought, he would conquer Death too.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew was a legendary figure - a great leader, a visionary, a change maker, a Father of a nation, and a loving husband. He was Singapore personified. He dedicated his whole life to revolutionising Singapore and transforming this tiny island into a thriving global hub.

Because of his courage to dream, his strategic foresight and pragmatism, we are blessed with a roof over our heads, opportunities for pursuing a world-class education, a meritocratic and just society, and accessibility to top-notch healthcare, among many other privileges.

As students, we may not have known much about what he had done for Singapore (aside from what we have learnt from history books) or lived through the days under his leadership, but what we do know, is that he had left us with an immeasurable wealth of opportunities. To him, we owe immense gratitude.

Even when he's gone, his legacy lives on.

"At the end of the day, what have I got? A successful Singapore. What have I given up? My life."

Thank you Mr Lee Kuan Yew. :')
