L.E.N.A.S - Ministry of Food

Having a dilemma over deciding if you should have Japanese or Western cuisine?

Just head down to Ministry of Food at Nex. Located at a corner of the second floor, M.O.F has both L.E.N.A.S (offering American-Italian fare) and My Izakaya (serving Japanese food) under one roof.

An advantage of dining at M.O.F would be the additional discount offered to MOF Citizens (aka card members). If you happen to eat out often, I would suggest getting a membership card for better deals. Do note that certain restaurants, though under the MOF brand, do not offer discounts (i.e. Daessiksin Korean BBQ)

The restaurant was rather spacious with a moderate crowd during their weekend lunch hours, but soon after we had settled down, more patrons started streaming in.

It seemed to be very popular among young families, for we saw quite a few families with their little toddlers in tow.

As the dining area is shared between My Izakaya and LENAS, you could order from either menus.

Breaded Chicken Cheddar Cheese with Parma Fries and Whipped Potato ($17)

It was crispy golden perfection! The juicy, tender chicken was amazing, and it can totally hold its own without the cheddar sauce. Just skip the movie-theatre-imitation-nacho sauce. It will taste better without it.

The whipped potato, when topped with its gravy, was smooth and tasty. Way better than KFC's standard mashed potato.

If you were to ask me about the best side dish, Parma Fries would win, hands-down. They had a lovely crunch to it that would leave you craving for more.

Grilled Prime Ribeye (Medium Rare) with Black Pepper Sauce, Sweet Corn & Pilaf Rice ($28)

I loved the chewy tender texture of the medium rare ribeye but apparently it was too undercooked for my mom's liking. Personally, I thought it was rather decent for its price.

The sweet corn was average, and it would definitely taste better if it was slightly more buttery. (Honestly speaking, NUS Science canteen's Western Food stall's sweet corn would rank higher than LENAS'.)

However, the Pilaf Rice was a wrong choice of side dish. Dry, unsavoury and hard, by the time we finished our meal, it was still an almost-untouched mound on the plate.

Mozzarella Grilled-Cheese Chicken with Parma Fries & Sweet Corn ($17)

It's the ultimate fusion of pizza and grilled chicken. Perfect for cheese lovers (and for people who want both pizza and grilled chicken, but couldn't decide on which to have.)

Mozzarella Pan-fried Salmon with Sweet Corn & Coleslaw ($22)

Enough said, the mozzarella totally won me over. The crispy pan-fried salmon skin was deceivingly like the tasty thin crust of pizza.

The salmon though, would taste a lot better if the flavour had been properly infused into it. Perhaps the thick slab of meat made it hard for the flavour to seep through.

The coleslaw was a refreshing change from all the other warm side dishes & fried food.

Chicken and Dory with Mushroom Sauce and Coleslaw ($16.80)

The chicken and dory were tender and savoury. It's hard to go wrong with that combination, right? Drizzle them with mushroom sauce and their flavour would up another notch. (I preferred the black pepper sauce to the mushroom sauce...)

And if you have been following my reviews for some time, you would know that for every meal, I have a habit, or rather, obsession, with taking a combined photo. TADAAA... Here goes:

The food took around 15 minutes to be served, which is an acceptable waiting time, and the staff were all cheery and friendly.

The only hiccup would be when they delivered my set with one of my sides missing. Apparently the kitchen was preparing the next batch of sweet corn and they were in such a rush they forgot that my order had sweet corn included. :/ When I raised this issue with them, they immediately got my side for me once it was ready.

Do take note that plain water is chargeable at MOF.

Overall, I thought it was a decent meal, not really superb or impressionable, simply... comparable to Swensens'. Just remember to choose the right sides and you'll be fine.
